When we visit a chippy, we don't mention chippiesforbikers until we have paid and are ready to leave. This ensures we don't get special treatment or special deals or special meals. What we write is the plain, deep-fried truth. Brought to you by a member of Wolds Bikers - http://www.woldsbikers.net/
Comments welcome.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger34125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-37668906179519021812014-09-05T14:18:00.000-07:002014-09-05T14:18:40.535-07:00This is Germany...so it has to be schnitzel ..and a great one too, at the Zur Alten Abtel restaurant in Prum in the Eifel region. The miles just flashed by today, all 260 of 'em from Calais to here, mainly motorway. Was joined at motorway services lunch break by 4 BMW ditch pump riders from Norfolk. Then a Gold Wing turned up and the rider assured me that the Stelvio Pass was a great ride...even on a Gold Wing. Arriving in Prum, went past my hotel 4 times before I recognised it, disguised as it was behind a big sign saying "hotel".

I've decided to give motorways a miss for Saturday's leg to Rastatt at the northern entrance to the Black Forest, so I've set the sat nav to miss them. Same journey time, just 40 miles shorter at 160 miles. Might actually do some sightseeing!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-61281728778919350842014-09-04T13:20:00.001-07:002014-09-04T13:20:54.591-07:00Made it to Calais!Foreign touring does not get any better than this! Thursday night in the Ibis Budget at Coquelles! At least the bike should be safe as part of the car park has been sectioned off as Gendarmes nest, for some reason. There's hundreds of them....or at least 40 or 50.

No photos I'm afraid, as there are no fish and chip shops to report.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-74138930808871365562014-09-03T14:32:00.001-07:002014-09-03T14:32:26.805-07:00Off to the continent,Just setting off on the Pan on a tour to the famous Stelvio Pass. There are plans to hold the UK's first festival dedicated to fish and chips along the Lincolnshire coast.

Organisers say it would boost the economy of Skegness, identified asone of England's most deprived seaside resorts.

Ideas for the festival, which would initially take place in 2015 and 2016, include a "battle of the batters".

A bid for money has been submitted to the Coastal Communities Fund.

There would be events and activities in areas including Skegness, Alford, Louth, Tattershall, Sutton and Mablethorpe.

David Lambert, one of the people behind the plans, said Lincolnshire was the ideal place to have a festival dedicated to fish and chips.

He said: "We grow the spuds, we grow the peas, the fish is coming off the North Sea and being processed up at Grimsby. Where better place to have it?

"There's one in Australia, there's one in Italy, there's one in France, but there isn't one in Great Britain."

The mascot of Skegness is the Jolly Fisherman, symbolic of the town's connection with fish and the sea.

Mr Lambert added that fish and chips was a "democratic" dish that appeals to everyone - rich and poor, young and old.

The events would be centred around the "social, cultural, economic and historic importance of the UK's national food, fish and chips", he added.

Ideas include:

Let me say straight away that a blustery and chilly day at the beginning of March is NOT the day for cakes...well, not if you are tough, hardy, all-season bikers like wot we is.

Real food is what is required and real food is what we got on Sunday 2nd March at The Big Fish at Ollerton on the edge of Sherwood Forest. 12 bikes set out from Sleaford and 12 bikes arrived at the Big Fish. 13 highly satisfied customers (one pillion!) We all met at Sleaford, though most of us had already ridden a good few miles to get there. A quick trip down the A17 and A616 ended at the chippie that is more or less right on the A616/A614/A6075 roundabout. I won't say any more than that as I don't want to deprive you of the fun of google maps.

And The Big Fish? Clean, modern, excellent friendly service and decent grub, excellent value, too. We'll be back!!
No reason...just no chippies. Well, all that has now changed. 11 bikes from Boston Advanced Motorists converged on Dave's in Sheringham, Norfolk on Sunday 5th January. For a number of us it was a 220 mile round trip, starting at 9.30 a.m in dry sunny but frosty conditions. The temperature reached a sub-tropical 4 degrees Celsius by the time I made the starting point at Algarkirk and after a round about ride to Sheringham, we were basking in a temperature of 7 Celsius. No rain and no wind! A speedy ride back to the Anglia Motel on the A17 and we were still dry! All good things, it seems, must come to and end, though and for me the last 44 miles were in the dark, in the wind and in the rain. Washed most of the salt off the bike, though.

What was that? You want to improve your riding and driving skills, and reduce the risk of being involved in an accident? Shortage of images, I'm afraid, as I left my camera behind.

A 380 mile ride on Friday from home to Llangadog via Little Chalfont in temperatures between 18 Celsius and 33 Celsius meant late arrival, intense thirst, no time to cook - and indeed , no food to cook as we were lightweight camping and relying on eating out.

No problem as there was always The Black Lion in Llgangadog. Arrived at 10 pm to find the only pub in town did not serve food. We ended up with a new taste sensation: a bag of plain crisps and two pickled eggs...and a pint of the local bitter.

Seriously, if you are ever really really hungry and need something desperately to stop you eating your own arm...you'd be hard put to find anything worse!

The following day Saturday we took local advice and breakfasted at Miss Mollie's on the A40 at LLangdog. Used to be a Little Chef and shows what Little Chef could have been if only they'd tried. Thoroughly recommended..good choice, freshly cooked, well presented, decently priced... the complete antithesis of Little Chef.

https://www.facebook.com/MissMolliesDiner

Fed up , as it were, off to Aberystwyth ..to the bottom of the funicular railway on the sea front. We were followed through the town by two bikes who it later transpired followed us because we really looked as though we knew where we we going. Of course, we did know. It's just that we were not going to the bike show that they were looking for!

Then a pleasant if busy ride over to Aberaeron for ice cream etc. then a quiet cross country ride down the quiet and enjoyable A482 back to the camp site Rest of afternoon was spent reducing the nation's stock of beer and cider and soaking up the rays.

Sunday morning dawned cold and grey. Was that it? Summer been and gone? In reality, conditions were ideal for a quiet and progressive ride down the A40 to Monmouth. Great riding road, no traffic on Sunday morning...you should try it!
Seems it was't such a successful rideout...certainly not for Geoff.

Getting off his bike at Archer's Fish 'n'n Chip shop in Woodhall Spa, his bike toppled over..and Geoff with it..and he was stationary at the time. Result? A bike with a few scratches, Geoff with a badly-broken lower right leg, and no one had any fish 'n'chips!

His bike was lifted off him and in obvious and severe pain, Geoff's right boot was swiftly removed by the lads before his ankle had time to swell up inside. The ambulance arrived in double-quick time, followed by the police and Geoff was whizzed of to Pilgrim Hospital in Boston.

His right leg has now been screwed, pinned, plated and fettled up generally and he is back home. He's not allowed to put any weight on his leg for six weeks, though.

Thanks must go to the staff and owner of Archers for their prompt response and help in dealing with the situation. If you are ever in Woodhall Spa, try Archers for yoursellves. They are at 29 Witham Rd, Woodhall Spa LN10 6RWUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-32277764146525087582013-07-03T01:26:00.002-07:002013-07-03T01:26:54.667-07:00ALL QUIET ON THE FISH 'N' CHIP FRONT.....as one of our people is no longer allowed to eat them!! So stay tuned for gluten-free news!

Also, tonight is Barton Bike Night but I won't be there this year, though I WILL be at Boston Bike Night from 6 pm Thursday July 4th. Just make sure you visit the Wolds Bikers stand.

On Friday 12th July, 6 pm till late it's the Wolds Bikers Charity Night at the Coach and Horses Billinghay - raising money for LIVES and the Lincs/Notts Air Ambulance.

This is the Wolds Bikes major charity fund raising event of the year and I encourage you to come along with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. There are trade stands, classic bikes, BBQ, and Live Music by Gin House.

Oh, forgot to mention, you can also join Wolds Bikers on the spot..just £10 a year.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-79486620659294402552013-06-07T01:41:00.002-07:002013-06-09T01:49:28.442-07:00LOUTH BIKE NIGHT THURS 6th JUNE

All round, a good night. Sunny and reasonably warm, huge crowds of bikers and non-bikers - and bikes - keeping the local shops busy. The Wolds Bikers stand was busy as can be seen from these images. If visibility and awareness was our objective, then it was a success. If promotion of the Wolds Bikers Charity Night ( Friday 12th July 6 pm till late at the Coach and Horses Billinghay) was our objective, that too was a success, with numerous event flyers handed out.

These three! When in Spilsby, the place to head for is Honeybun, 26-28 Market Street Spilsby. How do I know? I've been there, that's how I know. It was Spilsby Bike Night on Tuesday 21st May and your heroes: Alan, Colin, Geoff, Maurice, Brian and more , many more headed to this Lincolnshire market town in the renowned Lincolnshire Wolds. We were not alone. Of course not, how can seven people be alone? There were in fact hundreds of bikes, hundreds of bikers and hundreds of non-bikers looking at the hundreds of bikes and the hundreds of bikers: that is what bikes nights are all about.

Warm and sunny today so off to Gibraltar Point for soup and roll and a short siesta in the sun. Miles of slow moving cars between Gunby and Skegness were no obstacle to progress on the Pan European and I made it to The Point Cafe at the Lincs Wildlife Trust Visitor Center in good time. The cafe is actually rather good. Here's the menu.

Discovery of the day though was Rachel's Cafe at Hagworthingham . With five stars for cleanliness, bright and airy and great service and good value , you raally must try this place, midway between Horncastle and Partney. The meals are good, too, as one of out crowd has testified. We'll definitely be back.
A quick cup of hot chocolate and a natter to what few bikers were around and then back down the bendy coast road as the temperature dropped from 12 to 11...to..10..ending up at just 6 Celsius!

However, in line with the theme of this blog, we did discuss fish and chips. The general consensus was that the food at Steels Corner House Restaurant is not what it was. Popular opinion was split between Thompson's in Wetwang - not yet visited by us - and the Market Place in Barton on Humber..unless, of course, you know better!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-29898412082386458242013-05-01T02:34:00.002-07:002013-05-01T02:34:59.552-07:00NO. WE HAVE NOT GONE ON A DIET!!It's just that we haven't been near any fish and chip shops recently. Last night was a Machine Control Session arranged by Boston Advanced Motorists Bike Section at the LRSP center at North Kyme. After a seemingly endless winter (and it's not over yet!), Alan, young Peter the Bandit and I managed a shakedown ride in the Wolds yesterday. I realise that three cups of hot chocolate at the Willingham Woods kiosk does not add to the nation's body of fish 'n' chip knowledge but it's the best you are going to get when its just 4 Celsius. But Shirley (it's an old joke!) it has to get warmer from now on so we can resume our quest. And what a quest it will be this year as I'll be reporting from the Black Forest in Germany (probably only finding Pork Knuckle and Sauerkraut shops) and will also be seeking out the best chippies between Dublin and Coleraine later in the year.

On another front, tonight, 1st April sees the Wolds Bikers first Monday night ride out of the year. 7.30 pm at the Coach and Horses Billinghay 'twixt Tattershall and North Kyme, Lincs, for a short 30 mile season-starter. If you are a Wolds Bikes member, please check your subs payment . If you are not yet a Wolds Bikes member, you can join for just £10 a year. You can't do everything all the time. My next outing is to the Springfield Motorbike Show at the Springfields Event Centre in Spalding, 26th and 27th January where I'll be on the Wolds Bikers stand or possibly the Boston Advanced Motorcyclists stand trying to recruits new members for both organisations: see Wolds Bikers and Boston Advanced Motorists
However, on Sunday 6th Jan I am hoping to get to Sheringham in Norfolk to sample the fish and chips there. I'll report back on how I get on.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-4601420476982956162012-10-23T13:47:00.001-07:002012-10-23T13:47:31.439-07:00Winter draws on....well, I've got mine on!Not much to report on the fish and chip front, I'm afraid. Not been out on the bike much as I've been busy at work. Still, I'm supposed to be an all year round biker so watch this space!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-9008837299254964822012-10-09T13:38:00.002-07:002012-10-09T13:38:19.918-07:00Cologne: a fish 'n' chip free zone!
An easy trip for the Pan European as Cologne is closer to home than is John O'Groats. Good weather there and good weather back, but in between, well, enough said! Star of the show was the new BMW GS (see New BMW 1200 GS report ). As for food, ham knuckle and sauerkraut predominated, and early nights, too as after 10 pm at night, the city centre just died...no one to be seen!
All I can say is that the prices were reasonable, lots of off road parking but the food was not a patch on the Market Place in Barton upon Humber...but then I wasn't in Barton, I was in Eye Green and hungry.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564040222682742021.post-23434576208033251122012-09-15T09:46:00.005-07:002012-09-19T09:20:22.626-07:00The Lion, Blakey Ridge, Kirkbymoorside
We rode over a wind-blasted Humber Bridge, now free to motorcyclists, breakfasted
at Mrs B's Woodland Cafe at the Humber Bridge Amenity
Area, Hessle HU13 0LN, then on through Malton and Pickering to
Rosedale Abbey. Turning left into Gill Lane leads you to the 1 in 3 (!!!)
Rosedale Chimney Bank. This you must try...but not on an icy day and whatever
you do, don't stop!! On over the moors to Hutton-le-Hole and turn right ,
climbing to The Lion. Back then via minor roads through Amotherby, touching the
west sine of Malton, minor roads to Pocklington, the Humber Bridge, Barton upon
Humber - The Market Place must be the absolute best chippie on here - and then
home. 12 hours and 260 miles of good riding in good weather.
